Global-Eyes supports Stairway
Stairway is a Danish-run, independent private aid organization that works for children’s rights and the prevention of sexual exploitation of children.
The basic idea behind Stairway is that every single person has resources, dreams and potential for development. In order to bring these to fruition, children in particular need care, protection and education.
The Stairway rehabilitation center is situated on a wooded slope close to the well-known tourist areas on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines an area in which many Danes have enjoyed holidays.
Three focus areas
The work that Stairway does consists of three main approaches:
- Direct help and rehabilitation of street children from Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. These children are accommodation, care and education at the Stairway rehabilitation center.
- Information work about children’s rights and the sexual exploitation of children. This is done via courses, workshops, teaching materials, cartoon films and theater.
- Training social workers, teachers, people in positions of authority and social organizations in the Philippines, and providing them with ways to exchange experience and build appropriate networks.
Who’s behind Stairway
Stairway was set up in 1990 by a Dane Lars Jørgensen and his American wife Monica Ray Jørgensen. They live and work at the center, with their own two children. The project is supported and run by the Stairway Danmark association.
Stairway works closely with both authorities and NGOs in relation to children’s rights. Stairways partners include the Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Sexual Abuse (CPTCSA) in Manila, Childhope Philippins, Justice for Children International, CORDAID, UNICEF, Microsoft and DANIDA.
Global-Eyes provides financial support for Stairway in the form of DKK 7,500 per contribution (first contribution Christmas 2007). The sum goes directly to Stairway, unconditionally and with no deductions. Global-Eyes has special relations to the Philippines, where Lars Wittig, the company’s founder and CEO, as well as several advisory board members lived and worked for many years.
